The Western Conference (French: Conférence de l'Ouest)) is one of two conferences in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) used to divide teams. Its counterpart is the Eastern Conference.

The Western Conferece was founded in 1928, when the two conferences were split following the formation fo the CHL. It was known as the Great West Divide, for the Divide located on the prairie provinces of Canada.

Unlike the CHL's superior, National Hockey League, there is no trophy for winning the Western Conference, at least during the regular season. In the playoffs, however, there is a trophy. It is called the Binkins Ball.

Origins

The Western Conference was first called the GreatWest Divide, at least until 1992. In 1992, CHL Commisioner Matthew Cighem, created the Western Conference Charter, which, like the Eastern Conference Charter, is part of the CHL Charter that seperated the Eastern Conference into divisions. The conference was first divided up into three divisions, the Cighem Division, the Praries Division, and the Coast Division.
